POST: what is your advice to Seniors that are just graduating and heading off to college for dance? What should they do over the summer? What should they bring? etc
My advice to incoming college kids is to remember that college is not an end to life as you know it. For too long I thought that if I left for college I would not see my friends, house, and family, until winter break! For some people that is true but the main point is that with the technology we have today it doesn’t really have to be that way. If you’re homesick, it’s ok to skype, or text, or call, or do a number of things to remind yourself that those relationships you had in the past do not have to be completely cut off. College is a great time to branch out and meet new people, but that does not mean stop talking to your old friends and your family, heck even your pets if you have any. People think, ‘I’m not going to miss anyone, I’ll be fine.’ To that I will say, college is a big change, there is going to be a time that you are unsure of everything, maybe you already are, that is when I would say, don’t forget to call home every once in a while. A familiar voice can also be the voice of reason.
My advice for this summer: do not stop moving! Over last summer I took a number of dance classes, of all styles, and I also ran, almost every night. It’s too hot to run during the day! I was happy that I did that because, once Strutter camp came around, I was dancing, and running for long hours every day. If you can’t make it to dance class, look, things up on YouTube! Several times last summer, I followed workout videos on youtube. Get creative, find a way to keep moving!
Another thing I did this summer (This may sound a little overboard but it really helped me) is made lists of everything that I needed to buy before leaving. Clothes, toiletries, bedding, and stuff I needed for moving into a dorm. Then, starting about two weeks before move in I went to about two stores each day, and bought what I needed. Maybe I am just an organizational freak, but I was ready to move in by my date.
Things to bring:

Things to bring:
- Foam Roller
- If you have access to a bathtub: Epsom salt
- Pain Killers: don’t use them all the time, but sore muscles require pain killers occasionally
- Water bottle!!! I don’t know why dancers even forget this item!
- Gauze wrap: I use wraps to compress ice packs to sore muscles, it is a great remedy to soreness!
- Any braces you might need
- All dance clothes
- All dance shoes
