April/May: Kara Ko

POST: what is your advice to Seniors that are just graduating and heading off to college for dance? What should they do over the summer? What should they bring? etc

As my freshman year is coming to a close, I begin to reflect on where I was last year to where I am now. This time last year, I was so ready to graduate however it was such a bittersweet moment especially saying goodbye to high school friends and family. Being a freshman in college is a huge transition, however as time passes, you definitely get used to everything like class scheduling, social life, work, your roommate, etc. The biggest advice that many people told me before I left was to be open and know that everything will be okay. Knowing this was probably the best thing to keep in mind because it’s so entirely TRUE! For me personally, I rarely got home sick, but talking to someone familiar like a family member, a former dance instructor, or even a close friend was something that also got me through those hard days. Get involved with your interests; there are many clubs and organizations out there, so start now! Open your door because it is such an easy way to make friends and to be social with others around you. Also know that this is the time to have fun, but at the same time make adult decisions/responsibilities. Learn how to become independent and be considerate to others around you. Absorbing all of this advice can be anxious at first, but it such an exciting and rewarding journey. Okay, so now on to my summer plans!! In the month of May, this is my “Kara time”, where I am going to read, catch up with some old friends, and relax. At the end of May, I am attending my cousins wedding in Houston, TX, which I’m so excited because I’ve never been to a wedding before! But on the down side, I’m taking two summer online courses that start at the end of May until the middle of July. In the month of June, I plan on helping my former dance studio with their summer dance camps and choreograph some solos for the upcoming dance season. In July, I am going to LA with my former dance studio and I cannot wait!!! Then lastly, in August I will help my former dance studio with their auditions for next year’s company. After that, is when I will be going back to Arizona, moving in to my own studio apartment by myself!! WHOO! On August 10th, is when I will start working at Aspire Dance Center. I cannot wait to see where I go with this and make this my “home”. Throughout the summer, of course I will still be dancing and continue my dance training.
