TEXAS FUTURE DANCE EDUCATORS: OCTOBER 2014
COLLEGE AMBASSADOR
KARA MICHELLE KO

One of my classes I’m taking this semester is Creative Practices. We meet three times a week for an hour and half. As an emerging artist, this class is crucial because it pushes your mind to the next level in terms of creativity and allows you to think more outside the box. It’s an opportunity to explore new choreography, style, and movement and gain a greater respect of other dancers around you. In the beginning of class, our professor will give us a project. She will say, “Your task is to find an abandon hallway and find five words that relate to your choreography.” Then we will get in groups of five or six and start to create awesomeness. At the end of every week, we will present to the class our project and after discuss our purpose of the choreography. There are no “tests” in this class. You basically have to show up, be present, be active, express your ideas or thoughts, and comment on other dance presentations. Many groups find some really cool spaces for their presentation. ASU has an art museum right beside us, so most groups find a place in there or even outside the museum. I have seen dancers perform in the memorial union, secret garden, dressing rooms, and all over the place. My favorite place, which I was apart of, was dancing inside an elevator! It is an interesting experience to get the opportunity to collaborate with other dancers who may not have the same style as you. Fusing each other’s background calls for a deeper meaning in terms of life skills. There is no “I” when working with these dancers, don’t single yourself out. I believe working with others is a good life skill to gain because you’re going to have to deal with it everywhere you go. Start learning now.
