March: Lauren MacNary

What does your schedule look like for next year? What kind of classes (dance and academic) will you be taking? What are you looking forward to next year?

Next year I am taking lecture classes, some will be based in history and others will be based in dance.  As I begin my last two years of college I am focusing more and more on the class room than the studio.  As a dance education major not only do I need to be well versed in techniques of dance but also its history, social aspects, and political importance.  I have already completed all of my practical course work which means next year I will be taking courses like “Dance in the Twentieth and Twenty First Centuries” and “Curriculum and Instruction.”  I am very interested in the first class since it’s presented in the way that most closely resembles a history class.  My second teaching field is in history.  I am very excited to start learning more about the history of dance.  The second class is meant for education majors specifically.  It is designed to teach me how to be a teacher.  It makes me excited but also nervous to start my education classes because ultimately they are a huge step towards graduation.  I don’t know if that makes me happy or sad.  It surprises me that college is only a four year period in which one is made ready to take on a professional job and perform it well.  Frankly it scares me slightly that I only have two years left of that period.  I also know that I am capable of learning many things over two years.  So I try not to be too scared of what will come after college.  What came after High School was awesome so I have no evidence to suggest that after college would be any different.
In the other side of my major I will be taking Texas History.  This is, of course, something one has to know a bit about if they plan on teaching history in Texas.  Maybe it’s because I was born and raised in Texas that I like its history so much.  I have heard others say that they found their seventh grade experience in Texas History to be very boring.  To me, however, I enjoyed it immensely.  I won’t get into the details since I am aware that history is not for everyone.

In case anyone hasn’t noticed, I am a total nerd which means I am excited about entering into my more lecture based classes.  I am also excited to get into some of my dance history classes.  I do have to keep up my technique and fitness so I will certainly be taking advantage of the Texas State Student Recreational Center.  I also hope to be a Strutter again next year.  I have made so many friends through the organization I cannot possibly leave it now.  I am sure that some of my best memories will be from my years on Strutters after I graduate. So I look forward to next year’s classes and also my friends.
