January: Lauren NacNary

What are your goals/New Year's Resolutions for this year as a dancer /student?

Happy New Year!
This year I want to focus on determination.  Sometimes as dancers, we talk ourselves out of trying things because of our own fear.  It may be a fear of falling or a fear of failing.  Whatever it is, it can stop us from trying something new in the first place.  Growing up we are taught to always try again, if we fail. As we grow older it is easy to lose sight of this.  Dance definitely taught me the important lesson of how some things really are impossible.  For example, some people, aka me, will never be able to sit in a perfect center split because of their anatomy.  Except this year instead of focusing on all the things I can’t do, I am going to focus on the things that I can do and what to try next.  I want to maintain a positive attitude in the dance studio and in my life.  Often if I make myself try, I get much farther along to my goal than I ever expected and sometimes reach it.  I remember at Strutter tryouts they asked us to do triple pirouettes.  Instead of focusing on how my pirouettes sometimes did not get around three times, I told myself to nail this one turn for the audition.  My determination paid off and I have happily spent almost two years with the team.  This year I want to face every challenge in this way.  I want to face my life’s challenges with determination, and hope instead of fear.  I hope that most people would agree that life is much better when looking through a lens of hope than one of despair.  I am determined to have a good year and nothing will stop me from having a wonderful year if I start with a positive attitude.
