Who in your dance life are you most grateful for?

I think that when many people are asked the question who are they most grateful for in dance they think of their mom or a dance teacher.  For this post, I want to thank my Dad.  While I did have a dance mom, I also had a dance Dad.  With two girls in the house on two different schedules, my parents often divided up between themselves taxiing us to wherever my sister and I needed to be.  So, who was the one to take me to all my ballet lessons as a kid?  My Dad!  He did not seem to mind one bit.  Even though he was finishing up his college degree at the time, he drove me from our house in North Austin all the way downtown for my classes at Ballet Austin.  I remember him writing his essays for his classes while he waited for my lesson to end.  He would be out there with all the moms waiting for me.  He never questioned me for wanting to dance and never does now that I want to be a dance teacher.  In fact, it was his appreciation of the arts that taught me the importance of learning from them.  He told me once that one of the reasons that he and my mother decided to have their daughters take dance lessons was one because of good posture, and two because of grace.  He told me that he never imagined that dance would not only teach us how to be graceful but also to have grace in our lives.  In dance class, we are expected to be respectful to the teacher and others.  We are also taught to never give up if something is challenging.  These are all lessons that lead to grace.  I am most grateful to my Dad’s support and his willingness to be one of the few dads waiting for their kid outside of the dance studio.
