October: choose one class that you are taking this year and let us know what you are learning, what type of tests, assignments, projects, you are having, etc.
This
year I am taking Composition Two. It is
exploration of choreography. So far we
have explored the different kinds of shapes and qualities of time. Our assignments for the class are always
really interesting. The first assignment
was about shapes. Each student was given
a type of shape to focus on. I was given
curvilinear (curved or circular) shapes.
It was interesting to figure out all the ways I could incorporate
curving or circular movement into my assignment. I could make curved shapes with my body, and
use circular movements. Also I could use
circular pathways in the studio.
The
next assignment was over Time. This was
exploration of how long one movement can take.
It also explores how the amount of time that is set effects how a
movement is performed. To add to this
exploration of time we began to subdivide.
Which means in between the beats of music, how many smaller beats can be
heard. This effected how movements are
performed even more drastically. The
more subdivisions the faster the movement, and sometimes it makes it more
urgent.
The
assignment that we are working on now is about sensation. This is a fairly abstract concept. Sensation is the intention behind a
movement. The dancer could be moving
through honey, or maybe they have color flowing out from every limb. This is a challenging concept because it
takes so much thought while one is dancing.
Sensation focuses on how the dancer performs. Something that difficult for some to
explore.
This
class is invigorating. It challenges the
mind and pushes students to beyond their comfort zones. I have learned a lot from exploring
choreography. Not only my own but
choreography of the others in my class.
Sometimes it is easier to learn from others experiences, then one’s
own. You can notice things on others you
might not notice on yourself. I have really been enjoying Composition Two. It will conclude with a solo. Where I will be able to use all the tools I
have learned over the semester. I am
very excited about it. This class is one
of the most interesting classes I have taken at Texas State.
