Sept blog: compare the beginning of this year of college to last year
My experience this year as a sophomore is drastically different then my freshman year. One outstanding difference is that I actually know where I am going. I have knowledge of where the buildings are on campus. There is something very comforting about this. Being a freshman is difficult because you have to leave at least thirty minutes before class just to figure out where your building even is. It is nice to know where I am going.
This year not only do I know where I am going I also know most of my professors. While I have some professors for the first time this year, many of them I have already had for past classes. There are pros and cons to having the same professor. Pro; they know how you work best. Con; they may have taught you all they can. However this is not a problem I often run into especially in college. I also have some professors that are new to me this semester. Including one who is new to the university! I enjoy her class, because she brings different ideas, choreography, and techniques to our department. The modern department at Texas State is heavily influenced by Eric Hawkins. One of the modern dance pioneers. The new professor brings ideas from many different pioneers. As a dancer I have always found it important to learn many different techniques of a dance form. For example, Ballet has different schools of thought: Vaganova, Balanchine/American, Cecchetti. Modern dance does as well.
This year I am glad to see progress in myself as a dancer. I am picking up choreography quicker than I have ever before. I have also been working on my performance quality throughout my journey at Texas State. As I watch videos of myself this semester I can observe the fruits of my labor. Of course there is always room to grow. It is only that I have come such a long way from the shy ballet dancer in her first modern class of 8th grade. I am so excited for this year’s growth and developments. Texas State is the perfects place for me to do so.
