SEPT BLOG: Compare the beginning of college last year with this year...
In the simplest terms, freshman year of college was definitely one huge learning experience! As most freshman usually feel, I was nervous yet excited about the new journey I was about to embark upon. I worried about things like what my classes would be like, how I would handle being far away from my family/friends, and if I would like the school and dance program once I was fully immersed in it.
My family decided to drive all of my stuff to Boston (3 day trip) because we didn’t want to stress about buying everything once we were there. The drive was really long but it was nice to relax and enjoy the city with my family before orientation week started. Move in day was pretty crazy not going to lie. Having to unload your things in the city can be quite the challenge but the school did an excellent job of providing help to unload and carry our belongings inside. BoCo dorms are not the typical college dorms, they’re actually historical brownstones which only hold around 35 students. Since the dorms are brownstones each room is unique so you could have one to four other roommates depending on the size of the room. I loved living in the dorms because you really got to know everyone you’re living with and we all ended up feeling like one big family. :) I spent a week in orientation attending meetings, visiting places in Boston, and doing a lot of meet and greets which can get quite fun if you’re at an arts school! I also had a ballet, modern, and improv class as well as an additional ballet placement class.
After taking my first class class during orientation week, I knew I had made the right decision in attending The Boston Conservatory. The students and faculty are amazing and everyone’s passion is so evident creating a wonderful atmosphere to develop in as an artist. The Boston Conservatory is also a very small school, with only 750 students, so you get a lot of personal attention from faculty and it’s pretty easy to get to know all the people you’re going to school with. Classes started the week following orientation and I had an amazing first week! I feel I had already grown/learned so much in such a short amount of time and it just kept getting better and better as the weeks went on. It’s an incredible feeling dancing in school as a college student because you know you’re that much closer to reaching your dreams and you’re surrounded by others who share those same dreams. I had many great experiences as a freshman including over 100 inches of snow (yay snow days), performing a Robert Battle piece on the main stage, and meeting some the greatest friends I’ve ever known. Moving halfway across the country can be scary, but BoCo made it not so difficult.
I was very excited to start my sophomore year of college! I couldn't wait to be surrounded by so many talented individuals and dance all day, every day. I no longer had the nerves of freshman year as I knew everyone and was well acquainted with the school and dance program. I moved into an apartment with my close friend this year which is still a work in progress but it’s nice to have your own place. I also feel more like an adult which is an exciting yet scary thing! As a sophomore, my days are much longer considering I have dance/academic classes, rehearsal for dance division concerts, and student choreography rehearsals at night. So far I am loving sophomore year! The classes I’m taking this semester include; Floor barre, Ballet, Horton, Modern Rep (Limon), Performance Rep, Creative Process, Jazz, Dance Composition 2, Alexander Technique, Introduction to Dance Pedagogy, and Cultural History of Psychoactives. (Next semester my elective classes and some academic classes will change.)
I’m so excited to be sharing my experiences with you all!!
